Planned Bot Downtime (UPDATED AGAIN)

The IRC bot will be offline from December 27th until December 30th. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Update: The bot will likely be down for longer than initially thought. I currently have no concrete time frame to provide, but I’ll keep you all informed if anything changes.

Update 2: It appears that the bot will actually be down until January 9th. If you have any questions or comments during the elapsing time, the best way to get them to me will be to comment on this post.

Update 3: The bot is back! Happy downloading! :D

The End of an Era

As of November 25th, Pani Poni is officially over with the release of the 17th and final volume. However, while sad, the end of one era marks the start of a new one.

Hekiru Hikawa has started serializing a new manga, with the first chapter coming out the same day Pani Poni v17 hit shelves. This new manga is called CANDY POP NIGHTMARE and I am currently planning to start translating it once the first volume comes out. Hopefully by that time I will have finished with one of my other projects >_>

In somewhat related news, I’ve added a new section to the projects page for Upcoming Projects. These are projects that I’m not working on currently, but am planning to start on at some point. Maro Mayu has been moved to this section.

In unrelated news, I have moved Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekisou to the Dropped Projects section. I haven’t worked on the sub for quite a while, I have no interest in working on it anymore, and you can find most, if not all of it subbed on YouTube. Therefore, it’s dropped. If anybody was still waiting for this, I apologize, but I’m not going to work on something I don’t enjoy.

Rant: Japanese romanization

This is somewhat of a pet peeve for me, but when you’re romanizing Japanese, it should be written in such a way that the target audience can read it as it is written and at least approximate the correct pronunciation. This is especially true in situations where the pronunciation is important, such as karaoke. Now, this is not to say that this is an issue in most situations. Japanese is, by and large, very simple to romanize.

There is, however, one situation which should be simple to deal with, but I am seeing an increasing number of fansubbers handling it incorrectly. This situation has to do with the particle “wa.” This particle is in a unique situation because, though it is pronounced “wa,” it does not use the hiragana for that syllable (わ) and instead uses the hiragana for the syllable “ha” (は). It is not intrinsically wrong to romanize particle “wa” as “ha.” One of the three main romanization systems does use that, but that particular system, Nihon-shiki, was created specifically for use by Japanese speakers romanizing their own language for other Japanese speakers. This is the heart of the issue.

When romanizing or translating, you should always consider your target audience. If, like the majority of those who watch fansubbed shows, your audience does not speak the source language, you should make every effort when romanizing to have the romanized text read phonetically as closely to the source language as possible. People who do not know the source language will not make the mental switches needed to pronounce things the way they were meant to be, they will say whatever is written. So please, fansubbers, when you are romanizing Japanese, think of your audience and write “wa.”

TLDR: If you write the particle は as “ha,” people who do not know Japanese will read it as “ha,” so if your audience is not Japanese, please write it as “wa.”

It would be remiss of me to post and not mention anything regarding our projects so…
Pani Poni v17 is coming out on November 25th and is currently slated to be the final volume.
I have been quite busy recently so I haven’t had much time to devote to translating, but things should calm down for me soon, so I’ll get back to that!

We just upped the craziness quotient!

We have another release for you all today! This time you get to enjoy the crazy antics of Iyo, Issa, and Kenta in AniYoko c15-16! We’re (finally) getting close to the end of the first volume and I believe all that’s left in it is a one-shot and an omake. Well…I say all, but those two things make up nearly a quarter of the whole volume O_o

Anyway, you can get this release in IRC from EBL|Ahoge pack #12

Happy reading!
